Introducing Lake Oswego Chiropractor Dr. Kimberly Guthrie
I chose to become a Chiropractor because it helped me after numerous falls while learning how to ski. My husband took me skiing for the very first time. We went to a place he had never been before and we ended up going down a black diamond run. Needless to say I looked like a snow ball instead of a snow bunny by the time I got to the bottom of the run. I injured my neck pretty severely. I was having difficulty concentrating in school, my arms were weak and I had a lot of pain and stiffness. I started seeing a Chiropractor, Dr. Bill Echelberger, and he helped me tremendously. He started asking me about my schooling and if I was interested in becoming a doctor of Chiropractic, so I researched it and decided it aligned with my core beliefs on how the body heals itself, and how Chiropractic helps the body’s inner wisdom to do what it is programmed for, self healing and self regulating.
I graduated from Western States Chiropractic College in June of 1998. I chose this college because it was close to my home and I had a husband and two young children at the time I started Chiropractic College. My favorite class was anatomy and physiology and especially the cadaver lab. I learned so much by being able to physically touch and trace out the human body. I am deeply grateful for people who donate their bodies to science, so I could have such a valuable education. The most challenging class for me was microbiology. We had a great instructor who made it very interesting, but it was definitely my most challenging course.
I met my spouse when I moved back to my hometown Pendleton, Oregon. He worked for Albertsons, so I would see him when ever I went grocery shopping. They say the grocery store is a great place to meet men and they were right. We have three children, all girls, ages 17, 15 and 4. We like to camp, ride bikes and hike. Last year my husband and I trained for the Seattle to Portland bike ride. We rode on a ride to Silver Falls and back, which was a 73 miles round trip. It was exhilarating on the down hill portion of the ride. I truly have a passion for bike riding and look forward to next year actually getting to ride in the Seattle to Portland ride with my husband.
My family gets regular Chiropractic adjustments, usually one to three times a week depending on what stresses are occurring in their lives. I get adjusted two to three times a week since my work is physically stressful on my body. I exercise four to six days per week. My favorite workout is Turbo Kick Boxing at 24 Hour Fitness. It is a killer workout. I also lift weights two to four days per week and either do the elliptical or walk/jog for thirty minutes on the days I lift weights. In regards to eating, I typically eat an innate diet (Paleolithic diet).
We use a natural approach to health care in my household. I do not have any over the counter medicines or pharmaceutical medications either. I believe your body is the best pharmacy we could ever use. When my family or patients start getting ill I adjust them two to three times per day, because every time you get adjusted it stimulates your immune response. When people take medications to suppress their symptoms of illness it goes against the bodies natural laws of healing. We are expressive bodies, meaning when we are sick we vomit, have diarrhea, snot, cough, sneeze, this is how our bodies get rid of foreign invaders, so if you take a medication that suppresses that response it drives those viruses and bacteria deeper inside, therefore individuals who use these drugs do not have strong immune systems and get sick frequently.
I love being a Chiropractor. It is a lifestyle choice, just like exercising, eating a good diet and thinking positively. Adjustments to the spine send a positive body response just like exercise does. It helps the brain and nervous systems function at optimal levels, and since we live our lives through our nervous system I feel this is one of the most important aspects of optimal health just like exercise, eating a Paleolithic diet and positive thinking.
